Students advance in science fair

TOLEDO—Twenty-seven, seventh-grade students from Sylvania St. Joseph School spent the day in science competition at the University of Toledo March 28.

More than 300 from seventh through 12th grades participated in the competition. For St. Joseph students, it was a continuation of the school’s local competition where they received a superior rating for designing, conducting, writing and giving an oral presentation of a control science experiment.

Of the 27 representatives, 22 students received a superior rating and qualified for state competition. Five other students received an excellent rating. A perfect score of 40 points went to Grant Aughenbaugh, Nick Ellis, Derek Kastner, David Nees and Matthew Pellioni. Other superior scores were granted to Kaytlynn, Csomos, Brian Devaney, Katie Grohnke, Adam Hock, Jared Karban, Melanie McCaig, Megan McLean, Meghan OBerle, Ian Okuley, Hunter Riccio, Bridget Smythe, Matthew Spegele, Jessica Stark, Sam Thomas, Hayley Turner, Nick Wagner and Jason Wietecki.

Students receiving an excellent rating were Elliot Beak, Jack Kulka, Jacob Nowak, Sarah Staelgraeve and Tyler Thebes. In addition, four students were awarded professional awards for their projects. They were Derek Kastner, first place in Oustanding Physics award for seventh- and eighth-grades; Sam Thomas, first place for the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Biotechnology Research for seventh- through 12th-grades; Melanie McCaig, second place for the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Biotechnology Research for seventh- through 12th-grades; Ian Okuley, first place for the Earth’s Sensitivity Award for seventh- through ninth-grades.
