SYLVANIA—The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania celebrated the 92nd anniversary of the founding of their congregation Dec. 8 with a Mass in Queen of Peace Chapel to give thanks for the past and reflect on their future.

More than 100 sisters also enjoyed dinner and camaraderie at Rosary Care Center in honor of the occasion.

Established to staff the schools of three growing Toledo Catholic parishes in 1916, the Sisters of St. Francis have expanded their mission to include higher education, health care and pastoral work to all people, regardless of ethnic origin in dioceses across the country from Texas and Minnesota to California and Ohio.

“Our pioneer sisters left us a legacy of sacrifice, fortitude, determination and perseverance,” said Sylvania Franciscan Sister Diana Lynn Eckel, congregational minister for the community. “Because of them, we stand on a firm foundation and lift our voices in tribute and thanks for what they have handed on to us.”
