DEFIANCE—Defiance Catholic School is participating in the Defiance College early childhood education (ECE) students’ second annual countywide literature book drive, “If You Give a Child a Book.”
The collection of children’s literature books began Feb. 16 and concludes March 16. Books to be donated can be dropped off at Defiance Catholic School and are to be distributed from 10 a.m. until noon April 4 at the Defiance College Pilgrim Library.
The purpose of the project is to assist families in starting or building an existing home library; engage children and parents in reading that is fun, exciting and educational; and foster a positive attitude for the joy of reading. The book drive and literacy event helps promote the importance of early literacy development and supports the National Education Association’s Read Across America initiative.
Each child participating April 4 receives a tote bag of donated books, a new children’s literature book, a resource book (created by the ECE students) of children’s literature books with teaching strategies and activities parents can use with their children and the featured book by Laura Numeroff titled “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” which is to be read by a special celebrity guest.
The event is free to parents and children and light refreshments are to be served. Registration starts March 4.
To register, contact Sandra Golden, Defiance College assistant professor, at 419-783-2412 or sgolden@defiance.edu.
