TOLEDO—Toledo Central Catholic High School’s quiz bowl team took first place in the Great Lakes Academic League with a record of 22-2.

Winning the league title automatically qualifies the Central Catholic team to participate in the state tournament. The team has qualified for the tournament for the past five years through a playoff system, but this is its first automatic qualification. The state tournament is scheduled for the spring.

Team members include senior and captain Paul Weaner, who has been on the team for four years; seniors Connor Langenderfer, Ben Laws and Gabrielle Vasquez; junior Lindsay Mahaney; sophomores Jeremy Ellison and Adam Gainsley; and freshman Mike Laws.

“We’re very excited to win this league title, and it’s especially great as a senior because I have been working hard at this for four years,” says Paul Weaner. “We have always emphasized doing your best and continuing to learn throughout the season.”

The team also competes in the Toledo City League where it holds a current record of 6-2.
