Men and women discerning their vocations are invited to experience religious life through retreats held at Benedictine monasteries this summer.
Any single woman between the ages of 18 and 40 who has ever considered becoming a nun is invited to spend a week with the Sisters of St. Benedict in Ferdinand, Ind.
The Benedictine Life Week, scheduled June 26-July 2, offers an in-depth look at the life of the sisters as participants experience the rhythm of prayer, work and recreation. Time is included for input on monastic life, discernment, personal prayer and faith sharing.
For more information or to register online, visit www.thedome.org/JoinUs, or contact Benedictine Sister Michelle Sinkhorn at 800-734-9999 or vocation@thedome.org.
Men between the ages of 16 and 40 who are discerning their vocations are invited to attend a Summer Monastic Observer Program from June 14-July 31 at St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Ala.
This program also gives participants an inside view of monastic life for one week, or longer with the permission of the vocation director.
“This program will give men more time to reflect on monastic life and to further their vocation discernment,” said Benedictine Brother Jacob Amos, associate vocations director for the abbey.
“As a participant one will become aware of the joys and challenges of building community life as he observes and shares in the life of the monastery,” added Brother Amos.
The program involves participating in the Benedictine tradition of prayer and work, including the liturgy, the Liturgy of the Hours, and manual labor. There is time for reflection and contemplation, as well as classes on monastic life and prayer.
St. Bernard Abbey is a spirited community made up of 31 monks. In community, the monks help each other see every experience as an opportunity to follow and grow in the Spirit of God. They operate St. Bernard Retreat and Conference Center, Ave Maria Grotto, and St. Bernard Preparatory School. Some of the monks work in mission parishes or are involved in other ministries.
Anyone interested in spending a week as a monastic observer should contact Brother Amos at 256-255-5828 or brjacobosb@yahoo.com.
