Catholic school students selected for museum’s art council |

TOLEDO—Thirty-three area high school students have been named to the Toledo Museum of Art’s High School Art Council (HSAC), including seven from Catholic high schools.
The council is made up of exceptional high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated a passion for the arts.
Each of this year’s council members was chosen based on an application, a letter of recommendation from a teacher and an interview with program administrators. The students meet twice a month until the end of June to take part in a variety of hands-on learning activities, museum events and community outreach programs.
Council members include: Abby Byers of Waterville and Joe Hall of Sylvania, from Maumee Valley Country Day School; Abigail Lambert of Swanton and Rachel Kalinoski of Toledo, from St. Ursula Academy; Alexa Ohlers and Nikki Turner of Bedford High School; Allison Smith, Kaitlyn Elliott, Marcy Kniss and Petra Creamer of Anthony Wayne High School; Alyssa Caris, Bethany Wright, Carolyn Kauth and Lindsey Pinson of Perrysburg High School; and Anthony Miller, Jr. and Keith Hoody, both of Toledo from St. Francis de Sales High School.
Also on this year’s council are: Cash Hudson, Sarah Lewandowski and Yeahwa Hong of Springfield High School; Dan Schoen of Sylvania and Gil Byers of Maumee, from St. John’s Jesuit High School; Delaney Cavanaugh of Sylvania Southview High School; Emily Carmichael, Jamie Scherer and Tim Williams of Whitmer High School; Emily Dangler, Marnie Hull, Molly Vey and Rachael Greenfield of Ottawa Hills High School; Hallandra Johnson of Waite High School; Monica Shireman of Notre Dame Academy; Rachel Minarcin of Northwood High School, and Shelby Sweinhagen of Otsego High School.
Steve Nowak, director of education and community outreach at the museum, initiated the council three years ago. “It started out of a desire to work with high school students in a more meaningful and connected way,” says Mr. Nowak.
In previous years, Mr. Nowak developed a majority of council activities. This year, he is giving council members more responsibility and encouraging the students to develop projects that will be of interest to their peers.
“We’re expanding their role so they have a bigger impact,” says Mr. Nowak. “These kids are really interested in the arts and what goes on in the museum, and they really want to make a difference.”
Currently, the council members are painting a mural they have designed on the walls of a Museum classroom. Before the end of the school year, the students will also create videos and content for the HSAC page on the museum Web site (www.toledomuseum.org/learn/high-school-art-council), design and curate a community gallery exhibition, and arrange a museum tour and gallery activities for fellow students.
Involvement in the council also gives students the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes at the museum. After-hours gallery access, visits to the attic and basement, and interviews with museum staff are just a few of the perks of being on the council.
