Catholic Health Partners gets new division leader

CINCINNATI—Catholic Health Partners (CHP) announced the promotion of Brian Smith to president and chief executive officer (CEO) of its North Division, effective Feb. 25.

Mr. Smith was executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO) for St. Rita’s Health Partners in Lima. He had been with St. Rita’s since 1990.

The North Division stretches from St. Rita’s Health Partners to Mercy-Northern Region in Toledo to Mercy-Lorain.

Mr. Smith reports to Steven Mickus, CHP’s president of healthcare operations and chief operating officer. He fills a vacancy created by the departure of John Starcher to Health Management Associates.

During his time with St. Rita’s, Mr. Smith held positions of ever-increasing responsibility. His accomplishments include a strong track record in building collaborative business arrangements; leading multi-disciplinary teams focused on improving throughput, reducing costs and introducing new technologies; redesigning service line management to increase market share by 18 percent in five years; developing a physician employment organization consisting of 100 providers and achieving $23 million in annual net revenue; and providing leadership resulting in St. Rita’s achieving nine consecutive years of strong financial performance.

Mr. Smith is a native of Jackson, Ohio, and graduated from Jackson High School in 1983. He earned a BSBA from Ohio Northern University in 1987 and went on to graduate from Ashland University with an MBA in 1998. He and his wife, Becky (Ross) Smith, are the parents of three children: sons Clayton and Derek and daughter, Kyle.
