TOLEDO—The annual Red Mass is to be celebrated by Bishop Leonard P. Blair at at 11 a.m. Sept. 27 at Rosary Cathedral.
Several changes have been incorporated into this third annual Mass for people working in the legal profession. First, it fulfills the Sunday obligation of Roman Catholics. Second, the dinner and featured speaker part of the program has been eliminated. Third, the annual Jack Schlageter Award is to be presented at the end of Mass by Bishop Blair.
This year, the JSA will be awarded posthumously to Mike Jilek, former Toledo Bar Association president and University of Toledo law distinguished alumnus. Mr. Jilek was a dedicated attorney and devout Roman Catholic who died unexpectedly Sept. 7, 2008. He was involved at his parish, Toledo Christ the King, and delivered Holy Communion to patients at Toledo Hospital in his retirement.
The award is named in honor of the late Jack Schlageter, who was a well-known and respected attorney and a founding member of the Court of Equity of the Diocese of Toledo. Former recipients of the award are the late Jack Callahan and Judge James Carr.
The Red Mass derives its name from the color of the vestments worn by the celebrant and others, signifing the fire of the Holy Spirit’s guidance to all who pursue the ends of justice through the law. The tradition dates back at least to the 12th century.
This year's Red Mass is open to all, and its target audience includes lawyers, judges, legislators and all who are affiliated with the legal profession. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend. Judges are invited to participate in the robed procession.
