Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati celebrate jubilees

A total of 39 Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati are celebrating jubilees this year. They represent 2,160 years of service in the Cincinnati area, in dioceses throughout the United States and in Guatemala and Mexico.

Five of the jubilarians have ties to the Diocese of Toledo.

Sister Jean Marian Crowley, 50 years
A native of Mount Adams, Ohio, Sr. Crowley (known as Sister Cookie to most) ministered for 11 years as a primary teacher at schools in Michigan and Ohio, including Lima St. Charles from 1966 until 1971. For the next seven years, she was a child care worker at St. Joseph Orphanage in Cincinnati.

In 1982 Sr. Crowley changed ministries and began working with the Boys Hope Program in Cincinnati, where she was a house parent until 1999. Since 2000 she has ministered as the director of Sisters’ Services at the Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse.

Sister Barbara Davis, 50 years
Born and raised in Cincinnati, Sister Davis ministered for 43 years in Catholic elementary education in Ohio and in Maryland. She ministered in the Diocese of Toledo first as a junior high school teacher at Findlay St. Michael from 1970 until 1976 and then as principal at St. Michael from 1976 until 1986. Sr. Davis also was a diocesan consultant in the Diocese of Toledo from 1986 until 1990. From 2004 until 2007, she served as principal at the Sylvania Franciscan Academy.

Sr. Davis said the highlight of her years was receiving the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) Distinguished Principal Award for the states of Ohio and Michigan in April 1998. She also was one of five private school principals to receive the U.S. Department of Education Distinguished Principal Award the following October.

Sr. Davis is currently ministering at Mercy College of Northwest Ohio, where she is the coordinator of alumni relations and annual giving.

Sister Ann Hunt, 50 years
Formerly Sr. Ann Kenneth, she was born in Cincinnati and spent 12 years teaching high school students in Ohio. Her greatest satisfaction was her 14 years of involvement in parish life. She was the pastoral minister at Findlay St. Michael from 1980 until 1985 before spending the next nine years as the director of religious education at St. Leonard in Centerville, Ohio.

Sister Ann Christopher Joseph, 60 years
Sr. Joseph, a native of Lansing, Mich., spent 22 years in education, teaching at schools in Colorado, New Mexico and Ohio. From 1964 until 1970 she ministered as an intermediate teacher at Lima St. Charles.

In 1975 Sr. Joseph transitioned into the health care field, and began work as a pastoral associate at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Mt. Clemens, Mich., and Harper Hospital, Detroit, Mich. She was involved in hospice work in Southfield, Mich., and Austin, Texas, before transitioning to parish work in 1991.

Sr. Joseph is retired and living at the Sisters of Charity Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse. She currently volunteers at several parishes in the Cincinnati area.

Sister Vincent Marie Willman, 60 years
Born and raised in Cincinnati, Sr. Willman spent 18 years ministering in education in Illinois, Ohio and Michigan, including Findlay St. Michael from 1967 to 1970.

In 1970 Sr. Willman became the director of religious education at Findlay St. Michael and the first parish director of religious education in the Diocese of Toledo. After seven years at St. Michael, she transferred to St. Gabriel in Glendale, Ohio, teaching intermediate grades for two years before returning to parish work from 1979 until 1995.

From 1997 until 2007, Sr. Willman served as the director of youth religious formation at St. Veronica parish in Cincinnati. She also coordinated the school liturgies during that time. Sr. Willman is currently retired and living at the Sisters of Charity Mount St. Joseph Motherhouse, where she also volunteers.
