TOLEDO—On Sunday afternoon, June 3, it was discovered that a large outdoor statue of Our Lady of Grace, located in the garden behind Toledo Rosary Cathedral, had been desecrated and vandalized by unknown persons.

The incident occurred sometime late June 2 or early June 3. The solid Carrara marble statue stands five feet tall and weighs in excess of 600 pounds. It appears as though a heavy object was used to disfigure Mary’s face and hands before it was broken off its stone base.

The cost estimate of damage is not yet known. According to Bishop Leonard Blair, “Looking at the image of the Mother of God prostrate in the dirt amid broken pieces brings sorrow to the soul.”
Anyone with any information regarding the vandalism is asked to contact the Rosary Cathedral office at 419-244-9575.
