Notre Dame Sister Mary Rita Kretz, formerly Sr. Mary Phillis, died June 21 at the Provincial Center in Toledo. Born in St. Michael’s Ridge, Defiance, Sr. Kretz entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1940. She taught students in grades 1-8 for nearly 40 years, living and ministered in many schools and parishes, including Bethlehem Sacred Heart, Norwalk St. Paul, Fostoria St. Wendelin, Maumee St. Joseph, Bellevue Immaculate Conception, Leipsic St. Mary, Delphos St. John, St. Michael’s Ridge St. Michael, Marygrove Immaculate Conception, Fremont Sacred Heart, and in Toledo at St. Ann, Christ the King, Gesu, Ladyfield and Mary Immaculate School. During her later years, she served her community in many ways, especially as a seamstress. She is survived by her brother, Walter, and preceded in death by her brothers, Leo, Donald and Raymond, and her sister, Alice.
