Adrian Dominican Sister Jane Celeste Fries, formerly Lorene M. Fries, died June 18 in the Adrian Dominican Life Center. She was born in Terre Haute, Ind., to Louis and Mary (Arlt) Fries. She received a bachelor’s degree in history from Siena Heights University and a master’s degree in education from the University of San Francisco. She was a professed member of the Adrian Dominican Sisters for 69 years. Sr. Fries taught at Toledo Blessed Sacrament from 1943-45 and in schools in Illinois, Puerto Rico, California and Nevada. She was also a principal of schools in California and the director of education for the Diocese of Reno. Sr. Fries served in hospital chaplaincy for 20 years, was a member of the marriage tribunal for the Diocese of Oakland, Calif., and was co-provincial of her community’s Holy Cross Province for three years. Sr. Fries is survived by her sisters Mary Scannell, Jane Baca and Betty Das.

VIDEO: Sylvania Franciscan Sister Pat Taube lost her hands and feet last July due to complications from an infection that nearly killed her. She moved back to Sylvania from West Virginia to recover at Rosary Care Center, where she continues to seek out ways to serve God and those around her in daily life.
