FAYETTE—Members of Fayette Our Lady of Mercy and Archbold St. Peter are seeking support to complete their fifth annual “extreme home makeover” project in their area this month.

Inspired by the ABC television show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” members from both churches donate their time and talent to improve the home of one local family in need each year.

This year’s recipient is Helen Rettle, an 88-year-old widow living in the Chesterfield area near Fayette. A past member of the former Lyons Our Lady of Fatima and current member of Our Lady of Mercy, Mrs. Rettle lives on a fixed income with more than 40 percent of her monthly Social Security check going directly to the gas company. Her tight budget leaves no room for major or even minor repairs to her home.

The Extreme Home Makeover Team decided to help Mrs. Rettle after they learned of her situation from her family.

Volunteers are to descend on her home Sept. 25 to install a new roof, paint the porch floor and railing, install a walk-in shower and hand railings for safety and complete a variety of other minor repairs and improvements, such as landscaping and general cleaning.

The team relies on donations from businesses and individuals to cover the cost of supplies. To donate supplies, money or time, contact Mike and Traci Maginn at 419-237-3344 or either one of the two Catholic churches.
