Ursuline sisters celebrate jubilees |

Sister Elizabeth Marie Brell and Sister Kathleen Padden are to celebrate 60 years as Ursuline Sisters with family, friends and community Aug. 19 at the Ursuline Center in Toledo. Both sisters entered the convent in 1950 and professed their vows in 1952.
Born Rachel, Sr. Brell is the daughter of the late Clarence and Bernice Brell of Maumee and she entered the Ursuline community from Maumee St. Joseph. She received degrees from Mary Manse College and a master’s degree from The Catholic University of America. She did further graduate work at Marygrove College, Detroit, the University of San Francisco, and took an art history course through Ohio University in Florence, Italy.
For 32 years, she taught at schools including Toledo St. Angela Hall, Toledo Good Shepherd, Toledo St. Charles, Tiffin St. Mary, Perrysburg St. Rose and in the art department at Toledo Central Catholic High School. She was also the principal at Lima St. Gerard, Toledo Our Lady of Perpetual Help and Toledo St. John.
Sr. Brell then studied for licensed practical nurse certification and worked at Riverside Hospital for 13 years. She was involved in the tracking, caring for and inventory of Ursuline Community art treasures and antiques. She was a co-founder of the Diocesan Principals’ Association and served on the Art and Architecture Committee of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission. Sister Brell is presently in charge of the ambience for the Ursuline Center Chapel and lobby area and is involved in working with clay and selling both functional and sculptural pieces .
Sr. Padden, formerly known as Sr. Mary Gabriel, entered the Ursuline Convent from St. Joan of Arc in Canton. She is the daughter of the late Katherine and John R. Padden. She attended Kent State University before entering the convent and completed her studies for undergraduate and graduate degrees from Mary Manse College. She did further graduate work at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and the University of Toledo.
Her career included teaching at Toledo Rosary Cathedral, Toledo St. Angela Hall, Lima St. Gerard and Perrysburg St. Rose. She taught at Toledo Central Catholic High School and was a consultant for high schools through the Diocesan Catholic Schools office. She was at Toledo St. Ursula Academy for a total of 28 years serving as teacher, assistant principal, principal and president and was the primary fundraiser there until her retirement in 2001. Sr. Padden served on the Ursuline Convent Council from 1976 to 1982, 1991-1994, 2002-2006, and was elected for two terms as general superior, from 1982 to 1988. Sr. Padden also taught English conversation for a year (1989-90) at Sei Urusura Gakuin in Hachinohe, Japan, a Catholic high school for girls operated by the Ursulines of Quebec, Canada. Sr. Padden presently serves as the archivist for the Ursuline community.
