SYLVANIA—During his Sept. 27 state of the university address, the president of Lourdes University announced the institution has received its first individual $1 million gift from Russell J. Ebeid.

“We are so thankful to Russ for his support of Lourdes University,” said Robert Helmer, president of Lourdes. “Our students have already benefitted greatly from the Ebeid Student Center named in his honor, and now will further benefit from the services and activities offered in Lourdes’ new athletic center.”

The university is still in the development stage of planning for its new athletic center, and is expected to break ground on the project in 2012.

Mr. Ebeid, whose granddaughter Kristina Ebeid is a 2007 Lourdes graduate, shared a few words about his support of the institution, saying, “I am always drawn to Lourdes — to return to the beautiful campus that so reminds me of my childhood in southwest Detroit.”

Mr. Ebeid also spoke about the strong connection between athletics and academics in helping students compete in today’s market. He concluded with one lighthearted request as benefactor of Lourdes University’s athletic center: “I only ask that I be allowed to throw out one of the first baskets during the inaugural game so that I might finally accomplish my college ambition of being a student athlete,” said Mr. Ebeid.
