Catholic school wrestlers compete in state tournament |

COLUMBUS—Seven area Catholic high schools qualified 14 wrestlers to the 73rd annual Ohio state championships and nine made it to the final day of the tournament at The Ohio State University March 4-6.
Division III Catholic Schools had eight qualifiers and five all-Ohio wrestlers.

Tiffin Calvert High School senior Dillon Kwiat finished in third place at 171 pounds while teammate Jeff Stover placed seventh in the 152-pound class. Calvert senior Mike Mullen entered the state tournament as an alternate and earned a victory at the 215-pound class.
Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic High School qualified two representatives. Freshman Alex Guerra competed at the 103-pound weight class and sophomore Joe Dauch (112 pounds) stood in the sixth position on the podium.
Senior Kyle Gladieux (160 pounds) of Oregon Cardinal Stritch High School made his second trip to the tournament and capped off his high school career with a fifth-place finish in the state of Ohio.
Norwalk St. Paul High School’s Mitchell Gross competed in five matches and finished his junior season with a fifth-place finish at 171 pounds.
Junior Aaron Merschman represented the Blue Jays of Delphos St. John High School.
Senior Kevin Schoen represented the Titans of Toledo St. John’s Jesuit High School and was the lone qualifier for Division I from diocesan Catholic high schools. Kevin competed in three matches at the 189-pound weight class.
The area’s representation in the Division II championship tournament consisted of five qualifiers, all from Toledo Central Catholic. In total, Toledo Central Catholic wrestled 22 matches, scoring enough points to place fourth in the Division II team race for the second year running.
Senior, three-time state qualifier and two-time place winner Dan Cook completed his high school wrestling career with 135 total victories. Junior Tony Martin defeated four opponents to finish his season with a fourth-place finish. Seniors Jake Henderson and Vincenzo Cardone were state finalists and both are two-time state place winners. At 215 pounds, Jake finished his senior year with a record of 49-1 boasting a school record career win total of 142. In the 285-pound weight class, Vincenzo earned a second-place finish. Junior DJ Beauch made his second trip to the championship tourney and earned a victory ending his season with a record of 42-7.
