Central Catholic names new girls basketball coach

TOLEDO—Toledo Central Catholic High School appointed Marty McGurk the new varsity girls basketball coach.

Mr. McGurk has been a social studies teacher and assistant varsity coach at the high school since 1995. Previously, Mr. McGurk was the head girls basketball coach at Springfield High School from 1988 to 1995, and head coach at Notre Dame Academy from 1983 to 1988. At Notre Dame he won five Blue Division titles and one district title.

After Mr. McGurk joined Steve Pfahler at Central Catholic in 1995, the Lady Irish put together nine City League championships, eight district titles and four appearances in the state final four. The Irish trademark pressure defense was Mr. McGurk’s creation.

Mr. McGurk is very involved in community affairs and is a past president of the Arc of Lucas County. He is an active parishioner at Toledo St. Catherine and a member of its school board.

Mr. McGurk is a 1975 Central Catholic graduate, and he earned a bachelor’s degree in education (social studies) from the University of Toledo.
