Rossford Knights celebrate 50 years

ROSSFORD—The Rossford Knights of Columbus celebrated its 50th anniversary at a special event June 5.

State Deputy Paul Upman presented a certificate from the Supreme Council congratulating Holy Cross Council 5139 of Rossford for 50 consecutive years.

“It is a remarkable achievement to keep an organization going for this many years,” Mr. Upman said.

Co-chairmen of the 50th anniversary event were Ken Gwozdz, Rob Ryan and Chuck Gibbons. Mr. Ryan served as master of ceremonies for the event at the Carranor Club in Perrysburg. He noted the importance of the organization in “creating Christian fellowship among men of the community, as well as giving back to the community.”

The Knights of Columbus is a national Catholic fraternal benefit organization started in 1882 in Connecticut. Fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works. The K of C’s four core principles are charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.

The Rossford council, Holy Cross 5139, was founded in April 1961 when 66 men became charter members. Bill Rattigan was the first Grand Knight who began and organized the council.

Lou Durkac was recognized as the Grand Knight who served the most years. Records show he served as Grand Knight at four time periods for a total of 24 years, according to K of C member Ed Tucholski. Eighteen of those years ran from 1989 to 2007.

Bill Santus, who was present at the celebration, also was recognized as the only other charter member who has been a continuous member for 50 years.

Mr. Ryan presented the “Knight of the Year” award to Keith Tong, who is the current Grand Knight of the council.

Mr. Tong then presented the Family of the Year award to the Gary Yoder family.

Mr. Tucholski received the Volunteer of the Year award.

Sylvania Franciscan Sister Mary Irenaeus Samsel received the Religious of the Year award.

Chuck Gibbons received the Past Grand Knights certificate for his three years as Grand Knight.

In addition, Bailey Cherry, an eighth-grade student at All Saints Catholic School, was named the Youth of the Year. Bailey also is the recipient of the annual scholarship given by the council. Bailey competed in the Knights of Columbus “Keep Christ in Christmas” poster contest and was selected as the top award in the Toledo area. Her poster is to be featured on a billboard along the Anthony Wayne Trail during Christmas time.

Also at the ceremony, Jim Richards was given an Honorary Membership card because of his consecutive years as a Knight.

Former council chaplains Father Jonathan Wight and Father Joseph Steinbauer, who also are former pastors of Rossford All Saints, attended and gave the invocation and benediction.

Father Kent Kaufman, the current chaplain and All Saints pastor, also attended the celebration.

A slide presentation was shown featuring a series of photos reminiscent of the K of C years past and present.
